Styrene Butadiene Rubber (Known best by the Initials SBR) is a reinforced rubber with a synthetic fabric. SBR Rubber is a general purpose rubber, made from a copolymer of Butadiene and Styrene. SBR with inlaid synthetic fabric maintains the properties of SBR rubber with the added benefits of added puncture resistance, stability and tear strength. SBR Rubber is a cheaper synthetic rubber, and is commonly usable as a replacement for natural Pure Gum Rubber. The addition of styrene gives the added benefit of better wearing properties and offers a better abrasion resistance and overall material strength.

Product Details

SBR is a mixture of Butadiene and Styrene, mixed at an approximate 75%:25% mix ratio. The 2 compounds are copolymerized in an emulsion process, in which a soap-like surface agent emulsifies the materials in a water solution. Added to this SBR mixture, free-radical initiators and stabilizers present, to start the polymerization process, and prevent the degradation of the final product.

While SBR can be used as a replacement with Pure Gum Rubber, there are some key differences between the 2 products. SBR rubber is generally inferior in its fatigue resistance and ability to withstand lower temperatures, while SBR is superior in its ability to handle longer-term heat and capability to withstand abrasion. SBR has a poorer chemical and solvent resistance in comparison to other elastomers. Like pure gum rubber, SBR Rubber is vulnerable to degradation from thermal and oxidation sources. Degradation of SBR typically occurs as an increase in material stiffness and overall brittleness.

SBR Rubber is the highest volume general purpose synthetic elastomer. It is highly useful in many applications similar to Pure Gum Rubbers, and is recommended for light or medium duty service use.
